Literally the last thing Liverpool needed

Liverpool’s defensive injury woes have been compounded by reports of a ‘serious’ injury suffered by Joe Gomez while on international duty with England.

The Reds are already without Virgil Van Dijk for the foreseeable future, while Fabinho is still nursing a hamstring problem and Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up an injury at the weekend against Manchester City.

And now both the Times and Daily Mail are reporting that Joe Gomez has suffered a ‘serious’ injury ahead of England’s friendly with Ireland.

England boss Gareth Southgate will provide an update on the central defender’s fitness in his press conference ahead of the Ireland game.

Despite the season only resuming in mid August, Gomez has already played 18 times (12 for Liverpool and six for England) this season.

As for Stephen Kenny’s side, they are without Calum Robinson (positive Covid-19 test) and Aaron Connolly (injured) while Sheffield United forward David McGoldrick announced his retirement last week. Seani Maguire and Ryan Manning have been called up as cover.
