Another reminder that football didn’t begin in 1992.
The papers are quite rightly full of plaudits for Jamie Vardy, who it seemed had everyone behind him in his pursuit of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record streak of scoring ten successive Premier League games.
Even the Dutchman was giving the unlikely Leicester sensation his encouragement ahead of yesterday’s game against Newcastle where the 28-year-old matched his mark with the opening goal as the Foxes went top of the table.

But Vardy still has a long way to go before equalling the all-time top-flight record set by Dubliner Jimmy Dunne, who scored in 12 consecutive games for Sheffield United in the First Division season of 1931-32.
Dunne was in the midst of an incredible run of form for the Blades, for whom he racked up 143 goals in 173 appearances. He also netted 13 times in 15 appearances for the Irish national side in the 1930s.
Should Vardy’s incredible run continue, he will be looking to equal Dunne’s mark with goals against Manchester United this weekend and then Swansea, before attempting to make the record his own against champions Chelsea on December 14.
