Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy was dismissed in the Foxes 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday for a horror challenge on Republic of Ireland defender Matt Doherty.
After coming off the bench in Leicester’s season opener against Manchester United last Friday, Vardy started for Claude Puel’s side against newly promoted Wolves and got off to a great start when Doherty headed the ball into the back of his own net.
New signing James Maddison extended the hosts lead just before the break in what would ultimately be the match winner but Vardy soured the game in the second-half with an awful challenge on Doherty.
With both players going for the ball, Vardy nailed Doherty with a studs up challenge that ended the Dubliner’s afternoon as he was quickly replaced by Morgan Gibbs-White.
Puel admitted after the match that Vardy’s dismissal was warranted but that the England striker was also quite unlucky to receive a red card.
“We have to support Jamie,” said Puel.
“It was a sending off, but he was unlucky. He touched the ball, but perhaps after he was too much. He follows through but it will be an opportunity for another player in the next game.”
