Jamie Redknapp’s face after going toe-to-toe with Roy Keane as Matt Doherty caught in the crossfire

Niall McIntyre

After five minutes of verbal jolting with Roy Keane, Jamie Redknapp had the face of a man who’d gone 12 rounds with Muhammad Ali himself.

Spurs were the subject and nobody was safe, not even Matt Doherty, burned badly in the crossfire by his own compatriot.

“Does anyone really think Doherty is going to make Spurs a top four team?” a hysterical Keane asked as the showdown reached boiling point.

Graeme Souness tried to intervene but couldn’t get to the pitch of it. It’s not often you see the Edinburgh man so subdued but in fairness, maybe he was just enjoying the show like the rest of us. Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink was beckoned to the table but Jimmy Floyd was soon sat down. Roy Keane was spitting fire and Jamie Redknapp was in his sights.

Oh baby!

As the Premier League edges towards an inevitable conclusion, certainly at the prestigious end of the table, it seems that the most exciting thing about the whole pageant these days is the goings-on at the Sky Sports studio. The Sky Sports studio when a certain Cork man is on the stage.

This time around, Spurs were the topic of discussion and while Jamie Redknapp batted for his old club, Keane was having none of it and what transpired was five minutes of TV gold.

One particularly memorable exchange revolved around Sergio Reguilon, with Keane dismissively saying international caps were now being handed out ‘if you can trap a ball’.

“That’s why Real Madrid let him go,” Keane declared. “Why do you think Real Madrid let him go?’ … How much did they let him go for? How much did they let him go for? It’s not as if [Spurs] paid £60m or 70m for him.”

Some personal highlights included the following lines.

“If you can trap the ball, you can play for your country these days.” – Roy Keane.

“We’re sick of talking about Dele Alli? What’s going to happen with this kid. He’s lost the eye of the tiger.” – Roy Keane.

“If you don’t play for your country now, you are a bad player” – Roy Keane.

“I think the bigger picture for Spurs…” – Graeme Souness wisely trails off.

“Just take a breath Jamie.” – Dave Jones.

“Mourinho knows the game better than bloody all of us” – Roy Keane.
