Watch: Talented midfielder wanted by Ireland and England scores stunning free-kick against Rangers

A cracking goal from James Maddison...

Robert Redmond

James Maddison will be loved by Aberdeen fans for this goal.

The 19-year-old midfielder, on-loan from Norwich City, scored a last-minute goal against Rangers on Sunday at Pittodrie.

The game was deadlocked at 1-1, with Irish winger Jonny Hayes scoring the opening goal for Aberdeen, when Maddison stepped-up to hit a sublime free-kick.

The ball was out of reach of the Rangers’ goalkeeper, hitting the post, and sent Pittodrie into raptures.

Maddison is from Coventry, but qualifies for Ireland through a grandparent, and understood to have been on the radar of Irish underage officials. However, according to a report in The Sunday Times, the English FA have attempted to block any approach for the player.

He has yet to feature at underage level for Ireland or England, but definitely seems like a player to keep an eye on, and one who could end in the Premier League before long.

He was linked with a move to Liverpool last January and Tottenham Hotspur were also reportedly keen on the player.
