Martin O’Neill named the 34-man squad this morning and the big news is the inclusion of Bournemouth’s Harry Arter
After what seems like an age, international football is back and in a little over two weeks, Ireland will play Poland at Aviva Stadium in a crucial Euro 2016 qualifer.
Following defeat last time out, against Scotland, a win over the team currently top of Group D would be very welcome and O’Neill has named a strong squad.
The most eye-catching name is Bournemouth’s Harry Arter, who gets his first call up after an impressive season for the side who are currently top of the Championship.
The 25-year old, who qualifies via his Sligo grandparents, told RTE last month he would relish the chance to play for Ireland and now he is a step closer.
Wes Hoolahan was initially left out of the 34-man squad only to be re-instated minutes after the original announcement.
The now 35-man squad in full is:
Goalkeepers: David Forde, Shay Given, Keiren Westwood, Darren Randolph, Rob Elliot.
Defenders: Richard Keogh, Marc Wilson, Seamus Coleman, Cyrus Christie, John O’Shea, Alex Pearce, Paul McShane, Ciaran Clark, Stephen Ward.
Midfielders: James McCarthy, Jeff Hendrick, Harry Arter, Glenn Whelan, Darron Gibson, Paul Green, Aiden McGeady, Anthony Pilkington, James McClean, Robbie Brady, Stephen Quinn, Wes Hoolahan, David Meyler.
Forwards: Robbie Keane, Shane Long, Daryl Murphy, Jon Walters, Kevin Doyle, Anthony Stokes, Simon Cox, David McGoldrick.
