Clearly, Newcastle fans were disappointed at their relegation from the Premier League, but nobody was blaming Rafa Benitez.
The Spaniard only took charge of the club in March, having started the season as manager of Real Madrid. Despite some improvements in the last few weeks, the task of steering Newcastle out of harm’s way proved too much for him, with relegation confirmed by Sunderland’s 3-0 win over Everton on Wednesday evening.
While many on Twitter were quick to mock Benitez’s misfortune, it soon became clear that many Newcastle fans wanted him to stay in charge of the club in order to return them to the Premier League.
Garnering the sentiment of the Newcastle supporters, the city’s newspaper The Chronicle, went to great lengths to persuade the former Liverpool and Chelsea manager to stay on Tyneside.
Featuring a begging letter, it attempts to remind Benitez that, unlike the reception he received during his spell at Chelsea, the Newcastle support is fully behind him and has faith that he will bring them back to the Premier League.
