Gary Neville earns massive payrise on return to Sky Sports despite failing at Valencia

Mikey Stafford

Let’s not forget England!

Yep, since taking his finger off the giant iPad Gary Neville has had a tough time of it – losing his job (and 11 of 28 games) at Valencia before going down with the good ship Hodgson after the unfortunate tragic cataclysmic biblically bad England showing at Euro 2016.

However, show us a manager who has endured no failure and we will show you a Football Manager nerd with too much time on his hands. Alex Ferguson lost a job, Jose Mourinho has lost his mind and a few jobs, even Pep Guardiola has lost his hair.

It is part of football management and can often be a platform to bigger and better things. Mourinho finally got the job he wanted at Old Trafford, Steve Staunton wound up at Darlington and Claudio Ranieri finally got his hands on a league-winning team after 30 years in management.

Neville may not be ready to get back on the management horse just yet but that has not excluded him from the wacky world where failure results in more moolah.

It would appear, according to the Daily Mail, that Neville will make an extra £300,000 per year on his return to Sky Sports – despite having a slightly smaller role on the flagship Monday Night Football.

The former Manchester United full-back was earning a healthy £1.2million per year for his acclaimed punditry before heading for his Iberian nightmare, and will return on a cool £1.5m to resume the banter with Jamie Carragher.

Fair play to him. It makes you wonder what other pundits could renegotiate their terms with a little blunder into the world of management.

Joe Brolly, who has a theory of everything, replaces Jim Gavin as Dublin manager. Thrilled to take over the team he feels are “saving football” he pushes Gavin’s tactic of seven forwards further by replacing the full-back line with Paul Mannion and a couple of soccer free-stylers. Dubs wind up in Division 3 in two seasons and Brolly returns to Montrose in a gold car.

Desperate to get back into the RTÉ studios, George Hook, takes a job as Bective Rangers thirds forwards coach. However the former USA Eagles coach’s insistence on the team wearing women’s lingerie makes for very tentative scrummaging and Hook is sacked – before being hired as the host of Lingerie Football on the Playboy channel.

National treasure John Giles is no longer a fixture on RTÉ’s studio panel, but having insisted he is not retiring, the former Republic of Ireland and Shamrock Rovers manager sets his sights on getting back in front of the cameras. He leads a heave against John Delaney, takes over as FAI chief executive, fires Martin O’Neill, leads Ireland to World Cup glory in Russia and increases League of Ireland attendances to an average of 45,000. Never gets back on RTÉ panel. Tough luck, Johnny.
