Even with three forwards in his dream 5-a-side line-up, Gary Lineker has no room for himself.
The former England striker played for some elite teams in his day, lining up alongside Barcelona’s stars and Leicester’s class of ’85 (two points off the drop but in a lofty position of 15th).
And the 55-year-old stayed true to his playing style when asked by SportsJOE to put together a five-man team using any player in history, saying, “if you’ve only got five players to pick you’ve got to go with at least three forwards.”
Those three men, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, likely wouldn’t do too much tracking back to help out centre-back Franco Baresi.
But, as Lineker explains, “No one else would get the ball with my team.”
Watch Lineker explain his choices here.
There’s no room for world’s best five-a-side player Mousa Dembele (copyright Kevin de Bruyne, 2016), but that’s fair enough given Lineker’s grand total of 0 midfielders.
We wonder which of Lineker’s picks is the ‘retro kit hipster’ and which is the ‘dirty bastard’. We all know who’s on goal-hanger duties.
Gary Lineker was speaking as part of the Walkers Choir of Champions campaign, helping Europe to get #GameReady for the UEFA Champions League.
