Erik ten Hag responds to video footage of him criticising Jadon Sancho in training

‘It is not just in terms of Jadon, it is for every player’

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag insists ‘certain demands’ must be met after footage emerged of him criticising Jadon Sancho in training.

The Dutchman has impressed supporters with his hands-on approach since being appointed Red Devils boss, with the former Ajax chief keen to lead each training session, rather than delegating to his coaches.

Ten Hag is desperate to implement patterns of play that his side can rely on, while also allowing his players to express themselves in the final third.

During United’s pre-season campaign, the 52-year-old has stopped sessions when players have failed to follow his orders.

On the start of the club’s tour in Thailand, a clip went viral on social media of Ten Hag criticising Sancho after the Englishman failed to pass to an overlapping defender during a training exercise.

He could be heard shouting, “Hey! Jadon! Pass!” to Sancho after the winger held onto the ball for too long.

Despite this, Ten Hag insists that he treats every player the same and that his criticism is intended to keep up ‘high standards’.

‘I will tell every player what I expect of them’ – Erik ten Hag

Asked about his criticism of Sancho in training, Ten Hag said: “I look to the player and I have a certain demand.

“And I will tell them, if they have capabilities, but you have to invest. It is not just in terms of Jadon, it is for every player.

“I will tell every player what I expect of them. I have high standards because you are here, you are playing for Manchester United, then you must bring every day on the pitch. That is an expectation I have.”

The Red Devils face off against Crystal Palace in a pre-season friendly today (Tuesday, July 19), before clashing with Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano prior to the start of the Premier League season.
