England’s bench reacts to penalty shootout win over Colombia

England won their first ever penalty shootout at the World Cup on Tuesday with a 4-3 win over Colombia in Moscow.

Harry Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the second-half before Colombia centre-back Yerry Mina equalised in stoppage time to send the game into extra-time.

Both teams were tied level at the end of the second period before misses from Andrés Uribe and Carlos Bacca sealed England’s first penalty win.

As expected, their bench was overjoyed with the win as England will now face Sweden in the quarter-final stages.

England manager Gareth Southgate, who missed a crucial penalty in England’s Euro 96 semi-final loss to Germany, said he knew his side was going to get over the line against Colombia and that they had the resilience and belief to see the game through.

“I am really proud of the way my team played,” Southgate said. “I thought we controlled the game in the 90 minutes. I thought we played with great discipline.

“We were very composed in our use of the ball, and in a big game I think that was impressive from a young group of players.

“We then had to keep our discipline several times, which was outstanding.

“And we had a cruel blow on 90 minutes, which we then had to show incredible resilience to come back from.

“Although for 10 minutes maybe we were knocked, we then were back in control of the game, trying to push for the win but not leaving ourselves exposed.

“It’s a night when I knew we were going to get over the line. I just felt we had the resilience and belief to get over the line, whatever it was going to take.”
