Watch: Egypt players lose it with referee after very controversial, late decision

Infuriating

Robert Redmond

Controversial.

Egypt’s African Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria ended in controversial circumstances on Friday evening.

The game in Kaduna finished 1-1, with Etebo Oghenekaro giving the hosts the lead after an hour, before Mohamed Salah equalised in the final minute.

As Nigeria went in search of a winner, they were dispossessed 30 yards from Egypt’s goal, and caught out by a quick pass.

Salah ran onto the end of the through ball, sprinting past two Nigerian defenders, and appeared to be about to go through on goal – until the referee blew the whistle for full-time.

In fairness, the allocated three minutes of injury time had just passed, and the ref can end the match when he deems it fit to do so, but you can see why the Egyptians were infuriated.
