Edwin van der Sar’s ultimate six-a-side team of former team-mates oozes class

Kevin McGillicuddy

Edwin van der Sar played with, and against, some of the best players of all time.

From his time with Ajax in the mid 1990s, to Manchester United at the end of his career, he really was blessed.

Even a legend like the Dutchman got the chance to play with Danny Murphy at Fulham, but he doesn’t make his ultimate six-a-side team unfortunately.

According to the Daily Mail, the Dutchman offered his thoughts on his best six ex-team-mates while giving a talk in Oxford on Wednesday.

He did find room for two Manchester United ex-colleagues, while his midfield and attack is oozing with class and skill, as well as the possibility of throwing a tantrum.

He opted for himself in goals, naturally enough, and just one defender in the form of Rio Ferdinand.

Only one of the famous Juventus midfield of Zinedine Zidane and Edgar Davids makes his VI, alongside Paul Scholes.

But it’s up front where the Dutchman’s native bias really takes hold, as he plumps for Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Kluivert, in a forward line that may be productive, but may be missing 50% of its potency for any away trip over water.

That all adds up to no Ronaldo, no Wayne Rooney, no Del Piero and no David Bellion.

Still a decent team mind.
