If you’re old enough, cast your minds back to the summer of 1991.
Dean Saunders, 27 at the time, had just been relegated from the English first division with Derby County, who finished rock bottom of the league with a mere 24 points.
Despite this, Saunders had bagged 17 league goals in the 1990-91 season, and had plenty of clubs interested in taking him away from the Baseball Ground, including the likes of Everton, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Having met with Howard Kendall, then manager of Everton, Saunders explained on talkSPORT how he attended a meeting with Forest manager Brian Clough and Archie Gemmill along with his agent, Kevin Mason.
Taking place at Alan Hill’s house, the former Wales international explains how the bizarre meeting – which was to try and thrash out a British record deal – saw Clough crawling on his knees, digging up flowers from the garden and encouraging Saunders to sing Frank Sinatra.
Take a listen. It’s quite possibly one of the funniest football tales you’ll ever hear.
Funnily enough, Saunders didn’t end up signing for Forest (not that summer, anyway). In the end, he moved to Liverpool, although eventually arrived at the City Ground five years later after spells at Aston Villa and Galatasaray.
