Flying high in Spain, the Scot is not impressed by what is going on in the Premier League
It may no longer be (maybe it never was) the best league in the world but the Premier League is certainly the world leader in hand-wringing right now.
Since all the English clubs departed Europe last week there has been a flood of articles fretting over what has gone wrong, standards in the game and how to get back to the summit of European football.
One man who knows the league very well, and who is now observing from afar is David Moyes and he has told the BBC that his is not at all impressed with what he has seen.
The former Everton and Manchester United boss began on BBC Radio 5 Live with one of the understatements of the decade: “Maybe we have talked up the Premier League more than we should,” before moving on to address the finances.
“Of course, the top clubs in Spain spend a lot, but the other teams can’t,” said Moyes.
“Atletico [Madrid] have had financial difficulties over the years but they have still reached finals. Valencia, Villarreal, they have have got quite far in the Europa League.
“So maybe we do go over the top about our league. This year it is probably the poorest Premier League I’ve seen in a long time.”
Whatever you may think of the 51-year-old after his disastrous spell at Old Trafford he is an astute football mind and when he says it is the poorest Premier League in a while you have to acknowledge that he is probably on the ball.
As the Notorious BIG once said, more money, more problems…
