Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother weeps with joy after Portugal legend extends goal record

Incredibly wholesome.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother couldn’t help but cry with joy as she watched her son star in Portugal’s convincing victory over Switzerland on Sunday.

The Manchester United attacker scored twice and grabbed an assist as Fernando Santos’ men secured a routine 4-0 Nations League victory over Murat Yakin’s side, with Ronaldo showing his class after being named on the bench against Spain just a few days earlier.

His double extends his record-breaking international tally to 117 goals for Portugal, and topped off an emotional night for both him and his family.

Ronaldo’s mother was in tears in the stands.

The 37-year-old’s two goals at the Estadio Jose Alvalade stadium were his first since the tragic death of his new-born son in April.

As he did after scoring for the Red Devils, Ronaldo celebrated by pointing to the sky. His mother, Maria Dolores, was seen in the crowd in tears while wearing a Portugal shirt bearing her son’s iconic number seven.

Moreover, the United man’s goals came at the home of Sporting Lisbon’s ground, where the five-time Ballon d’Or winner spent the early years of his career before securing a move to Old Trafford at the age of 18.

Sunday’s convincing victory puts Portugal top of Group A2, having been crowned champions of the inaugural Nations League three years ago.

Ronaldo will be keen to carry his goalscoring form into their World Cup campaign in Qatar later this year, as Portugal face off against Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea in Group H.

Ronaldo hints at Man United stay.

The Portuguese captain recently insisted that he remains very happy at Old Trafford and appears to be looking forward to working under new manager Erik Ten Hag.

“I was happy of course to be back at a club that really raised my career,” he said, reflecting on his return to United. “It was unbelievable.

“I was, and still am, very happy to be here.”

He also stressed that he firmly believed United would get back to the top of the English game, despite their recent woes.
