Cork man becomes Liverpool cult hero with new Kop song

Simon Lloyd

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Kevin Murphy.

Once known as “Cork’s biggest Liverpool fan”, the Rebel native is taking over the Liverpool-supporting world.

It’s been a rollercoaster few weeks for Liverpool – winning, losing, signing Van Dijk, selling Coutinho. The club knocked back a series of bids for the Brazilian from Barcelona in the summer, but reluctantly agreed to let him make the move to the Camp Nou last week in exchange for £142m but Kevin Murphy isn’t letting it get him down.

Instead, he’s spent his time thinking up a new post-Coutinho chant he hopes will be belted out from The Kop this weekend.

To the tune of The Archies’ Sugar, Sugar, Kev reminds his fellow Reds that – despite Coutinho’s departure – their club still has plenty of attacking talent on their books, namely Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Posted on YouTube originally, the footage has made its way on to Twitter where it has been widely shared. It is undeniably very, very catchy. Have a listen:

“If we were to sing it on The Kop, I’d love it,” Kev says as he signs off.

And, with that, the Reds have embraced him.

Liverpool return to action on Sunday when they host runaway Premier League leaders, Manchester City. It remains to be seen whether the quote catches on with the Anfield crowd.
