The only people more embarrassed than the Mexican fans on Saturday night were the 11 starters and three substitutes who could not stem the powerful Chilean tide.
Mexico were eliminated from the Copa America Centenario in humiliating circumstances as they were torn asunder from whistle to whistle, losing 7-0 in California.
Four goals from Eduardo Vargas, a double from Edson Puch and a solitary strike from Alexis Sanchez sealed a place in the semi-finals against Colombia.
And Mexico’s striking sensation Javier Hernandez refuses to shirk responsibility for the result as he posted a message to the fans of El Tri.
Disculpas a todos los mexicanos, que no los supimos representar como se merecen esta noche. Estamos muy avergonzados, tristes y dolidos…
— Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez (@CH14_) June 19, 2016
Chicharito’s tweet translates to: “Apologies to all Mexicans, that we failed them in a way that they don’t deserve tonight. We are very embarrassed, sad and hurting.”
While it will not come as much consolation to the supporters, at least the players aren’t blaming anybody but themselves and Hernandez is holding his hands up for his role in the defeat.
