Christian Benteke’s Liverpool career may well be over.

It is no secret that the Belgian has failed to impress in his first season at Anfield and rumours abound that he could be on his way out the door in the summer.

If that is the case then he may have already played his final game for the Reds at it emerged on Friday evening that the striker would be ruled for at least a month after damaging his lateral collateral ligament while on international duty.

Benteke will not have endeared himself any more to manager Jurgen Klopp over the international break as he was quoted by Belgium’s Voetbalmagazine as questioning why his manager was ignoring him.

“Some team-mates have said that I was lucky with the arrival of Klopp, because I certainly would play,” Benteke said.

“When your coach says he wanted to take you to Dortmund and a little later you sit at the same club and he ignores you it is hard to understand.”

Benteke has been linked with a variety of clubs ever since it became clear that Klopp didn’t consider him his first choice striker with sides like Juventus, Roma, Atletico Madrid and West Ham all reportedly monitoring his position.

Depending on whether or not Liverpool make it all the way to the Europa League final, Liverpool’s final game of the season could be either May 15 or May 18 and Benteke may return before then but Reds fans weren’t exactly broken up by the prospect of this injury putting an end to Benteke’s time on Merseyside.
