Celtic to make move for forgotten Liverpool defender

He hasn't played in a competitive Liverpool match in almost three years

Robert Redmond

A wise move?

Brendan Rodgers is interested in signing Andre Wisdom, according to The Liverpool Echo.

Wisdom hasn’t played a competitive game for Liverpool since September 2013, and has had three loan moves – at Derby County, West Brom and Norwich respectively – in the past three seasons.

Despite Jurgen Klopp’s side being somewhat leaky in defence, the 23-year-old doesn’t appear to feature in Klopp’s plans and can reportedly leave the club before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

Wisdom made all of his 23 appearances for Liverpool under Rodgers, who is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of their involvement in the Champions League group stages.

Kolo Toure, another defender who played under Rodgers at Liverpool, recently joined the Scottish club. However, Celtic’s defence is still very much still a work in progress, and the team have kept only two clean sheets in their last 10 competitive games.

Wisdom can play in central defence or right back, and may represent an upgrade on Saidy Janko.

He’s among of a number of fringe players at Anfield who look set to exit before the end of the transfer window. Luis Alberto, Lazar Markovic and Tiago Ilori could also leave, on either loan or permanent deals.

Mario Balotelli is also available, but we doubt Rodgers would be interested in that headache. Again.
