Carragher and Neville claim a Liverpool win will put Man Utd out of the title race

The pressure is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to win after some poor results of late

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have claimed that should Manchester United lose to Liverpool, it will put the Red Devils out of contention for the Premier League title.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have fallen away from the chasing pack in recent weeks and with Liverpool in a rich vein of form, a win for the visitors at Old Trafford will put them seven points clear with almost a third of the season underway.

Speaking on Super Sunday ahead of the crunch fixture, Neville and Carragher discussed what impact a defeat would have for United.

And the former Liverpool defender Carragher said that while trips to Old Trafford are never easy for the away side, three points for Jurgen Klopp’s men will be a big statement and end United’s title hopes. He said:

“I think if they come here, today, and win to go second in the table and got a real big game that you’ve won I think it will make people stand up and really take notice.

“You mentioned before if Liverpool win is that Manchester United out of the title race? 100 per cent that’s United out of the title race.”

Neville then agreed by saying a defeat would signal a worrying start to the season for Solskjaer’s side, but he doesn’t expect them to be lifting the league title at the end of the year regardless of the result.

He said: “I think for Manchester United to sit here at the end of the day and be eight points behind Chelsea, seven behind Liverpool, six behind [Manchester] City, with the run of games they’ve had would be a devastatingly bad start.

“I think it would be a terrible start to the season because they’ve had a really good run of fixtures. For me, I think it’s the unthinkable.

“I don’t think Manchester United can win the title if they win today, so it doesn’t change my mind.

“In terms of what it would do for confidence I think it would be a really bad one to go that far behind from the three main teams.”

A towering stack of chips on the line, then.
