Canelo Alvarez duped by fake Lionel Messi Instagram post

Simon Lloyd

Still going on.

The feud none of us expected, Canelo Alvarez versus Lionel Messi, rumbles on, days after Mexico’s defeat by Argentina at the Qatar World Cup.

Unless you’ve spent the last 48 hours under a rock, you’ll probably know that the Mexican boxer was not best please after footage emerged of Messi appearing to brush his foot against a Mexico shirt which was lying on the floor of the Argentina dressing room as he and his teammates celebrated their win in the crucial Group C encounter.

‘Did you guys see Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag,’ Alvarez tweeted after seeing the footage, issuing a stern warning.

‘He better pray to God that I don’t find him.

‘Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico!

‘I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls**t that Messi did.’

Despite the likes of Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas defending Messi’s actions in the time since, Alvarez still hadn’t calmed down by Monday night, when he reacted to a post appearing to show Messi using a Mexico shirt as a floor mop.

A tweet was sent in reply to Canelo saying ‘Messi is bigger than Mexico’. It featured an image which, at a glance, looked to be from Messi’s Instagram story. The image was, however, fake and definitely not from Messi’s official account.

Seemingly deceived by the image, Canelo quote tweeted the tweet with the abbreviation ‘hdp’, which stands for ‘son of a bitch’ in Spanish.

It seems quite a lot of fuss for something so insignificant…

Argentina’s hopes of making the knockout stages in Qatar were dealt a sizeable blow after their shock opening day defeat to Saudi Arabia.

The win over Mexico has moved them up to second in the group, with victory in their final game against Poland guaranteeing them a place in the last 16.
