Video: Bizarre scenes as South American match played in empty stadium halted by tear gas

What crowd were security trying to control? There's no one there.

This could’ve sparked a riot. If there were any fans there.

Nacional of Uruguay against Chilean side Palestino descended into chaos. The game, a qualifier for the Copa Libertadores, the South American version of the Champions League, was played in an empty arena after Nacional received a stadium ban due to a riot breaking out in their previous game.

And security were taking no chances for this game.

Despite there being no spectators present at the Estadio Gran Parque , tear gas got set off in a botched security drill, forcing the game to be temporarily suspended in the second half.

Nacional, despite winning the game 2-1, lost the the tie on away goals and Chilean side Palestino are through to the Copa Libertadores for the first time in 37 years.

They were apparently founded by a group of Palestine immigrants in Santiago 95 years ago. You see, you learn something new everyday.
