Ben Affleck to the rescue.
Well, more to the studio than to the rescue.
But the American actor and director (and writer, let’s not forget he penned an Oscar-winning classic) is now turning producer to bring to life a football story that unfortunately seems to be as old as Sepp Blatter.
Affleck, who has landed a role as Batman in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is teaming up with Gavin O’Connor – the director of Warrior – to bring Fifa’s corruption scandal to the big screen.
The Hollywood Reporter are saying that Warner Bros have won the rights to Ken Bensinger’s book, Houses of Deceit, and Ben Affleck will now team up with O’Connor to make the movie happen.
Bensinger’s book is seen as a definitive account of American Fifa exec, Chuck Blazer, and his role in one of the largest corruption cases of all time.
Blazer pleaded guilty to 10 charges including bribery and money laundering but has co-operated with the FBI since 2011, reported to have bugged Fifa meetings and helped bring the recent cases to light.
We’re not expecting a sequel to the Fifa-produced film, United Passions, anyway. That train-wreck was pulled by its distributor last week after not even taking $1,000 from 10 cinemas in the US.
It’s all downhill from here for Ben Affleck.
