They have a point.
Lionel Messi, the five time Ballon d’Or winner, best player in the world, and arguably the greatest footballer to have ever played the game, has finally won the La Liga player of the month award.
The award, which began in September 2013, has been given to players such as Luciano Vietto, Vitolo and Borja Baston in the past. While Messi’s teammate Neymar has won it on a single occasion, as has Cristiano Ronaldo.

When news broke today that Messi had finally received the award, Barcelona’s website reacted almost in an indignant manner, taking something of a dig at La Liga for only know deeming the 28 year old to have been the most in-form player over the previous month.
“While it may be almost impossible to believe, Messi has finally been named the La Liga Player of the Month. The award has been given out since the beginning of the 2013/14 season and, this January, after 22 other players had been deemed more worthy in past editions, it was finally given to the world’s best player.”
Messi’s six goals in January came in six league games, and included a hat trick against Granada along with goals against Athletic Club, Málaga and Atlético de Madrid. He now has 12 league goals on the season.
“Almost as inconceivable, Messi is just the second Barça player to win the award, now in its third season. Neymar took the honours in November.”
