Bad news for Liverpool fans as exit strategy for Jose Enrique fails

So near, yet so very far

Jose Enrique had some very harsh words to say about Newcastle’s transfer policy a few years ago.

When he signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2011, the full back went on the warpath against his former employers.

“They don’t want to spend in the club and bring quality players, that’s why everybody (wants to) go.

“The club has allowed all the major players in the team to leave, Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan etc. Seriously, do you think this is the fault of the players?

“This club will never fight again to be among the top six with this policy.”

In fairness to Enrique, the majority of Newcastle fans would probably have agreed with his sentiments at the time, though if they’d seen him take free kicks they may have been less thrilled by the news that the Spaniard was set for a deadline day move back to St James’ Park.

The defender has only six months left on his contract, and it was said that Liverpool were willing to pay up the remainder of his £60,000 a week deal so that they could get him and his camera phone off the premises.

But despite their being a will it seems there is not a way as Enrique failed to agree personal terms with Steve McClaren’s side.

Now who’s got a lack of ambition?
