Almost a decade ago, Ashley Cole switched from Arsenal to Chelsea in a deal which made him one of the best paid footballers in the land.
After reportedly earning close to £200,000-per-week during his final season at Stamford Bridge, it was claimed that Cole had agreed to take a staggering pay cut when he joined AS Roma in 2014 – agreeing a contract of only €45,000 (£35,000) per week.
The former England international has now left Italy and has signed a contract with LA Galaxy ahead of the new MLS season and once again, it appears poor old Ashley has had to take a drop in wages.
As well as describing him as ‘arguably the most decorated defender in English national team history’, The Los Angeles Times claim Cole will earn what amounts to around $6,000 (€5,300) on a weekly basis.
Even if that is a basic weekly wage that will be boosted significantly by performance bonuses, Cole is showing a desire to play for the love of the game that some thought he lacked during his acrimonious move from Arsenal to Chelsea.
