We could have written this article a few other times in the modern history of Liverpool football club.

Anfield chiefs express an interest in a player at this time of year, the club holds out for loads of money, Liverpool fail to pay extra money, player ends up going to another club, fans rage.

It happened with Mohamed Salah and Yevhen Konoplyanka in 2014, and 2016 ‘s version appears to be Alex Teixeira.

Granted Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez were all signed in January – but it is regularly a month of frustration also.

Shakhtar Donetsk forward Teixeira has already spoken about his desire to leave the Ukrainian side, and the club have told Liverpool they will need to stump up more cash if he is going anywhere this month.

Liverpool have already had two bids rejected, the latest believed to be around £28million, which was only snubbed this week.

The club are desperate for some much needed attacking verve, but according to reports this evening, the deal looks set to stall as the Reds are not prepared to pay almost £40million for the 26-year-old.

James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo is claiming this evening that Liverpool will not pay £38million for the Brazil international.

Liverpool fans meanwhile are mixed in their feelings about this evening’s news.
