Fans noticed that Ramsdale was wearing the away shirt during Arsenal’s game on Saturday.
Arsenal fans were left confused on Saturday afternoon as Aaron Ramsdale wore the club’s away shirt in their win against Newcastle United.
Second-half goals from Bukayo Saka and a neat volley from Gabriel Martinelli helped the Gunners – who could have had more if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang didn’t squander a close-range finish – cruise to victory against bottom of the table Newcastle.
Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle.
The win now puts Arsenal level on points with fourth-placed West Ham United as Mikel Arteta’s side returned to winning ways after their defeat to Liverpool last week.
Ramsdale was in fine form again – denying Jonjo Shelvey a first-half wonder goal after his sharp reflexes enabled him to tip his effort over the bar for a corner – but many then noticed something odd about Ramsdale’s kit.
Instead of his usual home goalkeeper shirt, an all green kit, he was actually wearing the club’s official away shirt – worn by outfield players. But why?
Why Aaron Ramsdale wore Arsenal away jersey against Newcastle.
Due to Martin Dubravka wearing green for Newcastle, the two goalkeepers are unable to clash in colours and with Newcastle already in their traditional black and white kit, referee Stuart Attwell changed his usual colours to blue – which would be the other option for Ramsdale – leaving him to wear the away kit.
It also turns out the club have registered their away kit as an official goalkeeper shirt for the 2021/22 campaign.
Still confused? We are too, but rules are rules.
It’s not the first time it’s happened this season either for Arsenal with it already happening on two previous occasions in games against Chelsea in the league and Leeds United in the Carabao Cup as Bernd Leno donned the away kit in goal.
