It’s good to see him in action again

Matthew Macklin won his return fight with a second round stoppage of  Sandor Micsko via a body shot tonight in Birmingham

The 32-year old has been out of action since a 10th round loss in November to Jorge Sebastien Heiland.

The Irishman proved much too strong for the Hungarian with a devastating punch to the midriff midway through the second round, to earn the win and set his record now at 32-6.

Speaking afterwards the Birmingham born Tipperary man said that he was glad to be back and to make a winning return,

‘It was nice to get a win. After four rounds against Heiland, I felt there was nothing there.  I had a good rest, thought and it is possible I was just burnt out. There’s lots of options.  I’m a big name in the middleweight division.  I’ll take any 50-5o fight.’

Macklin had long time friend Jamie Moore back in his corner after his recovery from being shot in the legs last August. Moore believes that Macklin still has potential to be a world champion,

‘He’s still got it. As you get older, you adjust your training a little bit.  I believe he can go on and win a world title.’

It was a feeling echoed by Eddie Hearn who said that Macklin shoukld be back in action shortly, with a belt possibly on the line,

‘The Daniel Jacobs fight (for the WBA belt) is one that can get made for the summer or September.  I’m pretty sure you’ll see Matthew Macklin fighting for the world middleweight title next.’
