St. Patrick’s weekend in New York City has suddenly turned into a boxing bonanza, especially for Irish fight fans in the city.
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has announced that the finishing touches are being put on a deal to get Ireland’s 2012 Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor fighting on March 18 in New York City.
Taylor is set to compete on the undercard of what is expected to be Gennady Golovkin’s title defence against Danny Jacobs in Madison Square Garden, Hearn announced ahead of her professional debut which will take place this Saturday night in Wembley.
“It looks like we’re set for 18 March at Madison Square Garden after discussions with Tom Loeffler over the weekend. It’s a huge opportunity for Katie Taylor,” Hearn said in Dublin.

Taylor will meet Poland’s Karina Kopinska in London this weekend in her first outing as a pro and will fight again before the year is out, on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s world title defence in Manchester on December 10.
That’s before she takes her talents Stateside in March.
“This is a new step for Matchroom Boxing and Sky Sports,” Hearn added.
“Some of you spoke to me after Katie’s gold medal in London about the possibility of her turning pro. There didn’t seem to be the same kind of appetite from broadcasters but there is now.”

We can expect a few sick heads in MSG on March 18 as another event will take place the day before, on St. Patrick’s Day itself, when Michael Conlan will make his professional debut and Paddy Barnes will look to add to his first victory on the pro circuit which ended in bizarre circumstances earlier this month.
So for Irish fight fans in New York for Paddy’s weekend, consider your evenings sorted.
