Katie Taylor on making history, Croke Park dreams, Jake Paul and life after boxing

Patrick McCarry

“I obviously knew it was such a special moment in my life.”

Katie Taylor sat down with JOE ahead of her clash with Chantelle Cameron, this Saturday, at the 3Arena in Dublin.

Taylor is undefeated in the professional ranks and a world champion across two different weight divisions, but the Bray native has had her fair share of close calls. It hasn’t all been easy sailing for the Irish woman, and she’s had to dig deep in fights, most notably her historic clash against Amanda Serrano last year.

“6,000 Irish people travelled over to Madison Square Garden for that [Serrano] fight,” said Katie Taylor.

“It was absolutely incredible and the support was insane, that night. Between the Irish and Puerto Ricans, the whole arena was electric.”

In all of these occasions however, Taylor has been given the nod, and emerged victorious, but not every one agrees with some of the judging in these bouts. The Wicklow warrior’s first battle against Delfine Persoon is one that is often referred to as a decision that went Taylor’s way when it maybe shouldn’t have.

With so many challenges presented in front of Cameron as she prepares to walk into Dublin on May 20th, the match-up between the pair will be a fascinating watch.

Taylor also spoke with Petesy Carroll about Jake Paul, her footballing past, Roy Keane and the possibility of being a pundit when she hangs up her gloves.
