Entitled to dream: Ray Moylette

Ben Kiely

After falling agonisingly short of the Olympics, Ray Moylette has dared to dream bigger in the pro ranks.

Ray Moylette of Islandeady, Mayo had a decorated amateur career which included multiple Irish titles, a European senior league title and a world title. When he defeated future Olympic gold medal winner Daniyar Yeleussino in 2008, he became the first Irish boxer in history to win a gold medal at the World Youth Championships.

After surpassing his initial goal of outdoing his brother’s achievements, he set sights on becoming an Olympian. He came very close to qualifying for Rio 2016 but dropping a unanimous decision to Hovhannes Backrov in Venezuela meant he fell at the last hurdle.

Coach Martin Brennan feared the loss would result in him hanging up his gloves for good. However, it only encouraged him to dream bigger. He racked up an impressive win-streak in the pro-ranks and his new goal is to bring a world title to MacHale Park, the home of Mayo GAA.
