On the eve of the Rio Olympics, Michael O’Reilly was reported to have failed a drugs test.

The Irish Examiner broke the story on Thursday afternoon, reporting that the Portlaoise middleweight breached the sport’s anti-doping regulations ahead of the games.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association confirmed later in the day that the 23-year-old has been provisionally suspended.

O’Reilly was included in the Olympic draw, which took place as the story broke, and has received a bye in the tournament.

The 23-year-old appears to be still preparing for his first fight.

It has also been reported that O’Reilly’s A sample showed up positive for a banned substance, that the boxer has been notified of the result and his fate will be decided in the coming 48 hours.
