Adonis Stevenson in critical condition after 11th-round knockout defeat

We wish him a speedy recovery

Adonis Stevenson remains in critical condition in hospital after suffering a brutal knockout defeat to Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk in Quebec City this weekend.

Stevenson lost his WBC and lineal light heavyweight titles when he was stopped by Gvozdyk in the 11th round of their bout.

A flurry of punches from Gvozdyk, a betting underdog going into Saturday night’s fight, forced Stevenson to slump in the corner and the referee immediately called a halt to the contest.

Canada’s Stevenson was rushed to hospital after being carried out of the ring on a stretcher and the 41-year-old’s promoter Yvon Michel tweeted that Stevenson is in critical condition.

Stevenson had held his titles for over five years and is a legend of Canadian boxing, having claimed a silver medal in the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

In recent years, ‘Superman’ has fought familiar names like Tony Bellew and Badou Jack.

“The WBC and boxing community from the world join in prayers for the safe recovery of our dear friend, great fighter and exemplary human being Adonis Stevenson,” the WBC tweeted. “May God provide the strength to overcome this unfortunate set back.”

It is times like this when we are reminded of the dangers of boxing and we hope that Stevenson makes a full and speedy recovery.
