One of the heats at the Irish University Indoor Championships ended in an absolute shambles when another sport encroached on the track.
Imagine coming into the home stretch leading the pack confident that qualification for the next race is just within your grasp.
You enter flow state – each step more fluid than the last, breathing technique so perfect that it’s second nature and the only thing your mind is focused on is that finish line that you’re going hurtling towards.
Then, much like in the movie Cool Runnings, you start the first ever Jamaican bobsled team, your legs inexplicably become tangled up, you lose the lead and your confidence and you’re perplexed as to how this managed to happen.
Then you look down to your feet to see the cause of all your distress – a fucking pole bar!
That’s exactly what happened to Queens University’s Niall Attwood, in one of the 800m heats at Irish University Indoor Championships in Athlone IT. He was leading the race when the bar from the pole vault competition came down onto the track and ruined his home stretch.
Fortunately, Attwood was awarded a bye to the final, where he finished in eighth.
