"I always do that, it's no accident. I broke my ribs doing it in China."

If he wins a medal, this might catch on.

Joao Vitor de Oliveira has just slid his way into the semi-finals of the 110m hurdles at the Rio Olympics.

The Brazilian athlete, in torrential rain at the Olympic Stadium, dived across the finish line to secure a place in the next round of the contest.

On first glance it appears as though the 24-year-old had lost his balance in the difficult conditions, but he revealed after the race that he had actually intended to slide across the finish line.

“I always do that, it’s no accident,” De Oliveira said.  “I broke my ribs doing it in China. People tell me not to do it, but it comes from the heart. I put myself first.”
