VIDEO: The Road to Rio documentary on Ireland’s Olympic hopefuls looks unreal

Four years in the making, a lifetime in the making.

The countdown to the Rio Olympics is on and the Irish hopefuls representing the country in Brazil are dreaming big.

RTÉ’s new documentary, Road to Rio, airs on Wednesday 11 May and tracks the journey of 11 athletes en route to the biggest stage in sport.

Ireland have a number of big contenders vying for success at the Games and the new weekly programme will follow the progress, the ups and downs, and the frightening sacrifices of the following athletes:

Michael Conlan – Boxing

Robert Heffernan- Walk

Ryan Seaton and Matthew McGovern – 49er class sailing

Fiona Doyle – Swimming

Paul Pollock- Marathon

Natalya Coyle – Modern Pentathlon

Sarah Lavin – 100m Hurldes

Cian O’Connor- Showjumping

Martyn Irvine – Track Cycling
Jack Woolley- Taekwando
