If I had a penny for every time this happened me down in Ken Doherty’s in Terenure, I’d still have no pennies.
We’ve all been there (as if). You’re chipping away on a break of 90-odd, 12 reds and 12 blacks. You spin the cue ball back up to the centre of the table to take a sensible blue, rather than try cannon through for another black.
And then it hits you, you were on for a 147. Facepalm!
Not only did Ding miss out on joining the illsutrious company of Cricible 147s, but he also missed out on the £30,000 on offer, for a maximum, and the tournament’s highest break.
Ding completely forgot he was on for the maximum, and only realised when the crowd groaned audibly as he comfortably drew the white ball up the table for the blue.
Not to worry though, he powered through to beat Mark Davis 10-7, so he’ll get another crack at the 147 in round 2.
