Video: Cricketer is run out after ball smashes bowler’s nose

Ouch

Taking one for the team.

This is one of the extraordinary cricket dismissals we’ve ever seen.

Playing for the Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Big Bash League yesterday, spin bowler Adam Zampa was credited with running out the Renegades’ Peter Nevill, although neither player knew all that much about it.

Batsman Dwayne Bravo’s powerful strike of Zampa’s delivery cannoned off Nevill’s bat at the non-striker’s end and cracked Zampa’s nose before hitting the stumps.

Zampa appealed for the wicket as he awaited medical assistance, while Nevill had to be told by the umpire that he was indeed on his way back to the pavilion.

“I didn’t realise.” Nevill said. “[Umpire] Geoff Joshua had to tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘by the way mate you’re out.’ My primary concern was Zamps, as soon as I’d seen what happened and the sound that it made was pretty sickening, my primary concern was how he was doing.”

Zampa was unsure if his nose was actually broken, but team-mate Marcus Stoinis said he could hear the sickening blow all the way out on the boundary.

“It sounded bad.” Stoinis said. “I was at long-on and it sounded bad. I didn’t know it was out because it happened so quickly, but yeah he’s [Zampa] alright…. It [the sound] was a bit disgusting to be honest.”
