Short skirts and slim jims on court today
A rainy Wimbledon so far means there are loads of seriously good clashes crammed in today, although keeping track of the reschedules is tricky.
Brit Johanna Konta is the favourite to beat 2014 finalist Eugenie Bouchard. Since losing out on the title to Petra Kvitova two years ago, Bouchard has had a hard time of things and comes to this match having only completed last night’s match at 8.45.
Hitting the headlines for wearing a revealing Nike ensemble, deemed by some bored idiots ‘too short for the court’, the 22-year-old will be back on the court where she had her finest career moment.
Number 16 seed Konta is Britain’s No 1, but I believe we’re going to see an upset, with Canadian Bouchard coming out on top, at 11/8.
Another homegrown player in Andy Murray will continue his campaign today to regain his 2013 Wimbledon title.
He over came Lu Yen-Hsun, nickname ‘Rendy’ in round 2 three years ago and is set for an exact repeat clash today – a good omen perhaps? Odds of 1/66 suggest the Scot probably doesn’t need one.
Rendy became the first man from Asia in 15 years to reach a Gran Slam quarter final here in 2010 when he surprisingly knocked out Andy Roddick. Can he send another Andy packing this afternoon? As much as I’d love to see it, I think not.
Beyond the entertaining and talented Nick Kyrgios, Australian tennis isn’t exactly going through a golden era, but late bloomer John Millman looks alright.
He toughed out an ugly five setter on Tuesday to set him up for today’s second round clash against Frenchman Benoit Paire. Although Paire is the 4/6 favourite, I believe he is vulnerable. Funnily enough, this could be the clash of the bean poles. Since I’ve already mentioned nicknames, Paire is also known as ‘La Tige’ (the stalk) and Millman could also be described as a bit lanky.
Backing these two slim jims to have a five setter today is 2/1 and looks a tempting wager to me.
