Killiney student Sarah Healy has set a new record for the 1500m at the European U18 Championships with a time of 4:18:71 to win gold in Gyor, Hungary.
Healy crushed the competition to win Ireland’s third gold medal of the championships after her win in the 3000m race as well as Rhasidat Adeleke’s win in the 200m women’s final.

Healy admitted after her win that the final day of the championships was tough given her performance in the 3000m final on Friday but that she said that she took some inspiration from Adeleke and Sophie O’Sullivan who both enjoyed strong performances in their finals winning gold and silver respectively.
“Just to get to the front after one lap I thought I’d stay out of trouble but I decided just to speed it up and take the kick out of other people’s legs before the end,” said Healy. “That was kind of the plan.
“That was difficult but seeing Rhasidat and Sophie yesterday kind of spurred me on. It got me excited. Today was tough, it was a long day, but I was relaxed and stayed in the hotel and just hung out with everyone there.
“I got lunch with them and now I’ll watch some Love Island to just take my mind of it. I was pretty relaxed.”
