RTÉ is beginning a new series on Thursday that is a must-see for Irish sports fans

The nostalgia will be real

Us Irish sure do love giving ourselves a nice aul pat on the back.

We’re not the States or the United Kingdom, we don’t have the population or resources to be winning big tournaments all the time.

But we give it one hell of a go and can always leave with our head held high.

There have been a lot of great Irish sporting moments but the lads at RTÉ have decided the undergo the unenviable task of deciding what is the best.

There will be five episodes for each of the decades with the 1980’s up first this Thursday on RTÉ 2 at 9:30 in a list that includes Alex Higgins’ World Championship win and Ray Houghton’s goal against England.

Voting lines will open on Thursday and will do so each week as the Irish public ultimately decide what is the greatest moment of all time as different pundits will break down some of the top moments.

Episode 1 – Thursday 9 November: 1980s – Eamon Dunphy, Joe Brolly, Sonia O’Sullivan

Episode 2 – Thursday 16 November: 1990s – Ruby Walsh, Derval O’Rourke, Ronan O’Gara

Episode 3 – Thursday 23 November: 1960s/1970s – Ted Walsh, Brian Kerr, Ger Loughnane

Episode 4 – Thursday 30 November: 2000s – Donal Lenihan, Derval O’Rourke, Eamon Dunphy
