Rare sports memorabilia often become highly-valued treasures, but few items ever garner as much attention – or cash – as this
A T206 Honus Wagner baseball card, produced in 1909, sold this weekend for $1.32million at the end of an online auction.
The card is well known as the Holy Grail for baseball card collectors as less than 200 were made, with fewer than half still in existence. The sale is not even the top price for one of the cards, with Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick reportedly paying $2.8million in 2007.
Wagner is one of the legends of baseball and was among the sport’s inaugural Hall of Fame class in 1936. Production of the cards was halted when Wagner withdrew permission for the use of his image, believed by some to have been prompted by his reluctance to have children buying the cigarette packs which contained the cards.
