Ireland is on the board at European Indoor Athletics Championships thanks to Mark English
The Donegal 800metres runner finished second in this afternoon’s final in Prague, coming through the field in style on the final lap to claim the silver medal behind pre-race favourite Marcin Lewandowski of Poland.
English, who turns 22 in ten days’ time, seemed to have been caught out with 400 to go by an injection in pace by Dutch athlete Thijmen Kupers, but bided his time superbly and gradually picked off those in front before pipping Kupers to silver on the line in a time of 1:47.20.

John Travers was Ireland’s other finalist, but his brave 1,500metres challenge never looked likely to yield a medal as he trailed home in seventh place.
