Vine: The controversial John Mooney catch that ultimately hobbled Zimbabwe

Was the spongy boundary disturbed or not?

Ireland are on the verge of the World Cup quarter-finals but it was a close-run affair.

William Porterfield’s team appeared to be cruising towards victory of their Cricket World Cup Pool B clash with Zimbabwe when they posted a mammoth score of 331. Zimbabwe were then reduced to 74-4 before their captain, Brendan Taylor, and Sean Williams began a boundary-laden pursuit.

Taylor went for 121 but Williams remained as the target decreased and the game entered the final overs. He went for another big hit, with the score on 300, but John Mooney caught him on the leg-side boundary.

Williams walked but one replay showed a minor disturbance of the boundary padding, which, in cricketing rules, means a six for the batsman. Considering Zimbabwe ultimately lost by five runs, the call to dismiss Williams, on 96, was a big one.

Judge for yourself.

Zimbabwe captain Taylor said, ‘You’ve got to take [Mooney’s] word for [the catch], but they zoomed in, and I thought it was pretty clear [that it was a six]. But you’ve got to take the fielder’s word.’

Porterfield commented, ‘It’s very hard to tell on the line. It was great skill anyway. I haven’t seen it so I don’t know.’

As it stands, the catch was good and Ireland have their third win in the CWC 2019 books.
