The Dubliner has come in for a grilling after questions were raised by Piers Morgan
Eoin Morgan has come in for a lot of grief as England’s one day team captain.
From his selection policy, to his own poor return with the bat to two heavy defeats at the World Cup, it has been rough for the Dubliner in the press.
In the wake of beating Scotland, not only a win but a game in which Morgan finally showed some fluency with the bat, some branches of the media found a new stick to beat him with; the national anthem.
Led by Piers Morgan, the Irishman was criticised for not singing God Save The Queen before the match.
Overnight, the England captain faced the press and the question came up. “I have never sung the national anthem when I’ve played for Ireland or England. But that does not make me any less proud to be an England cricketer.
“I am extremely proud to be in the position I am in and privileged to be captain of a World Cup side.”
We would have thought that would have been enough for the press but they pressed on looking for him to elaborate.
“It’s a long story but it’s a personal thing,” he said. “It would go on a lot.”
You would hope that the press would focus on more serious issues but if England do suffer another poor result, we suspect that this matter will pop up again.
