Thankfully, she’s OK.
Annemeik van Vleuten suffered a horror crash on Sunday afternoon in the women’s road race at the Rio Olympics. Leading with 11km to go, the 33-year-old lost control of her bike, came over the handlebars and crashed into a pavement.
The Dutch cyclist was taken to hospital with concussion and three fractures to her lower back. Dutch media reported that Van Vleuten had regained consciousness, and would spend 24 hours in intensive care.
In the early hours of Monday morning, and seemingly from her hospital bed, Van Vleuten tweeted an update on her condition.
The cyclist said she has suffered “some injuries and fractures, but will be fine,” and she was “super disappointed” to have crashed during the “best race of her career.”
I am now in the hospital with some injuries and fractures, but will be fine. Most of all super disappointed after best race of my career.

Van Vleuten also congratulated her compatriot Anna van der Breggen on her victory in the race.
Thanks for all the messages! Congrats to @AnnavdBreggen! We were a super strong team today with @ellenvdijk and @marianne_vos.
