Ireland women’s over 50’s are the champions of the world!
It was a very close final, but Ireland held on to win gold at the EXIN Masters world cup.
An early Linda Jenkinson penalty sent the Girls In Green 1-0 up early against Spain in Saturday’s final. Then the Aussie onslaught began. Ireland were a fortress defensively. They managed to hold onto the lead and keep the tournament’s joint-top goalscorer Sherly Simpson off the scoresheet to record a famous win.
From the very beginning, Ireland established themselves as one of the favourites to win the competition outright. They topped their group by defeating Argentina 2-0 in their opener before beating Chile and USA 2-0 and 2-1 respectively.
USAÂ were up again in the quarter-finals. Again, Ireland ran out 2-1 victors to secure a semi-final showdown with Scotland. The Scots were no match for the Irish who won the game 2-0.
And, of course, the Aussies fell short as well. The celebrations at full time were mighty.
So we already have a World champion side! The Over 50s won their World Cup in Spain this evening. How good are we at hockey? Amazing pic.twitter.com/FTDY6JB6iB
