Kilkenny’s All-Ireland final hero Denise Gaule was named as the Camogie player of the Year on Saturday night.
The Windgap player enjoyed a sensational season for the Cats, bringing the O’Duffy Cup back to Kilkenny with a late, great penalty in the All-Ireland final against Galway. Gaule edged her teammate Grace Walsh and Galway’s Shauna Healy to win the game’s top honour for her second time having been selected by her fellow players.
The champions dominated the team of the year with Gaule and Walsh joined by Davina Tobin, Claire Phelan, Miriam Walsh and Ann Dalton. Tipperary were the next best represented team while Galway, Waterford and Cork players were also honoured.
Beaten finalists Galway may feel aggrieved to have only two representatives on the team, especially seen as they defeated Tipperary in the semi-final but those are the breaks.
Meanwhile, Down’s star forward Niamh Mallon was voted as the Intermediate player of the Year. The gifted Portaferry player hit 2-3 from play to seal their final victory over Antrim while Armagh’s Ciara Donnelly was named Junior Player of the Year.
